What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files that a website sends to your computer or other devices connected to the Internet to uniquely identify the user's browser or to store information or settings in your browser. On each subsequent visit, cookies are sent back to the site that created them and thus "remember" the user's actions and preferences over time. They are stored locally in the temporary memory of the user's browser for different periods of time depending on the needs and are generally between a few hours and a few years, with the exception of cookies defining a maximum duration of 365 calendar days.
Cookies have different purposes, for example, to simplify navigation on the site, to analyze the use of the site, to store the user's favorite sites, to present advertising content more targeted than his interests.
Types of cookies
There are different types of cookies:
1) Regarding function:
Technical cookies: these cookies are strictly necessary for the proper functioning of the site, which is normally installed by the owner or operator of the site. They are useful for browsing pages, sharing site content, storing user login credentials to speed up the input on the site and retain preferences and credentials during navigation.
These cookies can be grouped into:
- session cookies, which allow users to browse and use our website (for example, to purchase items online or authenticate to access certain sections);
- analysis cookies, which can be likened to technical cookies in that they are used directly by the website operator to collect aggregate information about the number of visitors and the pattern of visits to the website
- functional cookies, which allow users to navigate according to certain predetermined criteria (such as language or products to be purchased) in order to improve the quality of the service;
Statistical and performance cookies: these are cookies that allow you to learn how users use the site, to evaluate and improve performance, and to prioritize the production of content that best meets users' information needs. The information collected by these cookies is generally anonymous and is not linked to your personal information. Generally, their use is linked to third-party services. When the data collected is not completely anonymous, the user is informed and can refuse to give consent to the use;
Profiling cookies: intended for the creation of user profiles, for example for promotional purposes, in order to send advertising messages in accordance with the preferences given during navigation and to evaluate the effectiveness of advertising campaigns. Thanks to these cookies, the advertisements appear on the site and are therefore potentially invasive. For this reason, for their use, a double information must be provided, short and long, and it is necessary that the user gives his consent.
Cookie of the owner of the site ("first party"): these cookies are set by the owner of the website visited by the user, who is responsible for providing the relevant information on their use;
Third-party cookies: these cookies are used for certain features provided by "third parties" to enhance the browsing experience (such as the inclusion of videos); among these are the cookies needed to integrate the products and functions of third-party software in the pages of the site, such as icons and preferences expressed on social networks, in order to share the content of the site (for example, via the "like" button "For Facebook, you can set a cookie readable by Facebook). Information collected by third parties is managed and governed by them in accordance with their privacy and cookie policies. For complete information on this subject, you can access the information on cookies and data processing on the third party sites.
3) Regarding the duration of storage:
Session cookies: these are generally technical cookies that are not permanently stored on the user's computer and are deleted when the browser is closed. They allow the user to navigate and use the site (for example, by allowing them to make a purchase or to authenticate themselves to access restricted areas);
Permanent cookies: these are cookies stored on the user's device for various periods of time that allow you to store your preferences or user actions on a website.
